Here’s an Earth Day Project to share with your class.
Clean Earth
Pollution is easy to understand when we see litter on the ground, but it is not as easy to see the effects of more insidious types of pollution, like chemicals introduced into the water system or toxins in the soil.
The Clean Earth filter experiment will help the children visualize how the Earth itself acts as a filter for everything that it absorbs. It is important to both limit the amount of chemical pollution we add to the Earth and also protect the types of environments that act as natural filters for our waterways, which are homes to countless animals and the source of our own drinking water.
Clean Earth Experiment
Supplies
• 1 empty clear plastic bottle (e.g. 750mL water bottle)
• Glass of water
• Soil/dirt
• Sand and gravel
• Large glass or clear container
Instructions:
Learn how filters clean debris from water.
Cut bottom off bottle.**Please have an adult do this part to ensure safety.
Leave lid on bottle and turn bottle upside down.
Add large pieces of gravel/small rocks first to partially plug hole in bottle.
Add sand to gravel in bottle. The sand will fall through the spaces between the gravel/rocks.
Mix dirt into glass of water.
Pour dirty water onto sand/gravel in bottle.
Carefully unscrew bottle lid and place neck of bottle into a large, clean glass or clear container.
Watch the water seep through the sand filter and into the glass.
The water poured through the sand should be cleaner than the soil-laden water.
The sand acts as a filter, trapping any particles in the water that are larger than the gaps between the grains of sand. The finer the particles used in the filter, the cleaner the water coming through the filter will be. A filter using only gravel would not get the water as clean as a filter using sand because the gravel particles are not as fine, so the spaces between the particles are bigger, therefore allowing bigger dirt particles to pass through.
